We all know the skin is the largest human organ and at the same time most exposed to external positive and negative effects - UV radiation, low temperatures, wind, dry air, dust, microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites), etc. We talked about the purpose of skin and its adequate protection with Tatjana Čop, a graduate cosmetologist and phytotherapist.

Why is it important to protect yourself as adequately as possible? What is the purpose of the skin?
One of the major purposes of the skin is a protective role. It is the border (barrier) between our inner and outer environment. Only healthy skin can fully perform all functions and resist the aggressive influence of external factors. This is why skincare is more than just cosmetics. Hands are most exposed to microorganisms, viruses, and bacteria. During a global pandemic, one of the least expensive, easiest, and most important ways to prevent the spread of the virus is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. It is best to use soaps based on vegetable and essential oils to prevent skin from drying out - soap based on calendula oil or with lavender oil. Wash hands for 20 seconds and rinse with hot water (25 °C). Disinfectants can be aggressive and damage the hydrolipid layer on the surface of the skin, making the skin more sensitive, while microorganisms more easily penetrate and damage the skin. The only thing effective against coronavirus so far is an alcohol-based agent (70%).

Is it enough to use alcohol alone?
Unfortunately not, because it further dries the skin. That is why we can enrich it with essential oils, to further nourish the skin and prevent discomforts such as redness, cracking, dandruff and itching. Essential oils are a mixture of various compounds and fatty acids. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that they have antiseptic and antibacterial effects. Today there are about 40 different essential oils that are used and each one has specific healing properties. All essential oils have antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. The most powerful essential oils against the viruses are tea tree, cypress, eucalyptus, lemon, oregano, cloves, laurel, rosemary, sage.

Tatjana ČopoHow to defend yourself against viruses?
In defense of the virus, it is paramount that immunity is strengthened. Medicinal herbs are a treasure trove of health and an inexhaustible source of natural remedies. A number of plants and their components have immunomodulatory properties. Medicinal herbs contain active principles that can protect against various diseases, boosting the immune system and eliminating free radicals. The most potent herbs for preserving the immunity that can be prepared as a tea beverage are eglantine, nettle, lemon balm, mistletoe, blueberry, sage, basil, wild oregano. The active ingredients of medicinal herbs for enhancing immunity, with their antimicrobial action, have a beneficial effect on alleviating the problems of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract, and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the digestive tract (the digestive tract is the largest carrier of the immune system).
